Guide: The family are holding Martha and Joan (the nurse) captive while Smith is standing at the sidelines, confused and frustrated. Latimer opens the fob watch, confusing the Family with the Doctor’s essence and the Doctor’s present scent. Martha causes a distraction, and orders Smith to evacuate the building.
Once back at the school, Martha and Smith argue about letting the students fight when in comes Headmaster Rocastle, informing Smith that Baines (the Family Son) and Clark (the Family Father) have gone insane and that people are being murdered. Rocastle and Smith begin to arm the students for battle/war while Martha hurries to Smith’s room to look for the watch. Latimer hides the fob watch.
The Family Sister finds Latimer, who strikes her with an image of the Doctor at his most merciless by beaming the Time Lord’s consciousness out of the fob watch. The Family send their scarecrow army to bring out the watch. The Sister appears and Rocastle thinks she is merely a simple girl and should be brought into the school for her own safety, ignoring the warnings from Martha, Joan and Smith. The Sister kills Rocastle and taunts the boys for their unwillingness to harm her. Once the Family realise that none of the boys have the fob watch, they proceed to kill them all when they are distracted by a beam from the fob watch that Latimer emitted from a window, and then escapes. The Family begin using alien technology from their ship to bombard the village to make Smith surrender. Smith must change back into the Doctor.
Smith stumbles into the Family’s spaceship, knocking down things clumsily. He gives them the fob watch in return for the stopping of the bombardment. The fob watch was empty, and Smith had changed back into the Doctor. The son realises that the Doctor had changed into human out of kindness for the Family. The Doctor suspends the Son in time, dresses him as a Scarecrow to watch over the fields of the Earth as its protector.
Latimer shows up to see the Doctor and Martha off, he is given the now-empty fob watch. The scene then cuts to the future, showing Latimer as an elderly in a wheelchair, attending Remembrance Sunday. The Doctor and Martha observe from the TARDIS wearing poppies. Latimer and the pair silently acknowledge one another as the Remembrance Service continues.
