Righto.
Got the new stem (from Wiggle) and this is the two side by side:

No welds on the new stem which I'm very pleased about.![Smile Smile](http://dw4n.com/ThM/images/smilies/smile.gif)
Unfortunately the new stem requires altering the spacers (and I haven't got any 1" spacers) so I've used a mountain bike spacer just to test it out (They are 1 and 1/8inch inner diameter so a bit too big to keep inplace). I have a set of six on their way to me so I can set it up properly with the correct ones.
This is the stem inplace on the bike.

Did a maiden ride on the bike last night. 20 miles, 2200ft of climbing on some crap roads. Complete with fog/mist and rain. All seemed ok, although I was tentative on the long fast descents so held back a bit just whilst I ensured the bike was staying in one piece! That said, highest speed was 41.4mph coming back into Glossop.
Used the bike again this morning to wander into work (another 10 miles) and again, no issues.
So, with absolutely no thanks to my local bike shop (who are still yet to contact me) a week after the weld failing the bike is back up and running. WIll give it a good clean this weekend and replace the black mtb spacer with correct ones and stick a small 3mm one on top.
Jobs a good 'un.
