Guide: The episode begins with the Doctor surveying the large Silurian colony he has found beneath the Earth before being taken captive by other Silurians to be examined by the Silurian doctor, Malohkeh. Amy and Mo escape their binds and make to escape when Mo see’s his son, Elliot, sedated in a chamber and under observation. This angers him and prompts him and Amy to take up weapons as they try to find a way out. The Doctor is forced to undergo excruciating pain before Malohkeh realises that the Doctor isn’t human like the rest of the captives. Restac, leader of the Silurian warrior caste orders the two (the Doctor and Nasreen) be destroyed and escorts them to the Silurian court, which is interrupted by Amy and Mo’s arrival, who are also captured.
Eldane, Restac’s superior is called by Malohkeh to help with the situation, and it is clear that there is a power struggled between Restac and Eldane, who demands a halt to the hostilities despite Restac’s demands. The Doctor contacts Rory and tells him to keep their Silurian captive safe to prevent further hostile actions, but he is too late for Ambrose (Mo’s wife) has already killed Alaya after she taunted her about Elliot and Tony. The Doctor and Eldane set up a meeting between Silurians and humans (represented by Nasreen and Amy) to try and end the conflict between the two species. But when Rory and the others arrive with Alaya’s corpse, Restac is furious and orders the humans death. The Doctor temporarily disables the Silurian weapons and the group run and barricade themselves inside Malohkeh’s lab. The Doctor learns that Ambrose and Tony set the drill on self-destruct before going down to meet with the Silurians. He and Eldane work out a way to destroy this with Silurian technology before it destroys the entire Silurian civilisation, even though it will cause their exit route to collapse if they cannot reach the TARDIS in time. Eldane forces the Silurians warriors to return to hibernation by instigating a toxic fumigation to allow the human group to escape. Eldane hopes that in a thousand years Silurians and humans can co-exist in peace.
The group, excluding Nasreen and Tony who have chosen to stay behind, reach the TARDIS where a crack in time is in the rock. The Doctor guesses that an explosion would leave shrapnel behind, and reaches into the crack, pulling something out that he wraps in a handkerchief. As the group prepare to depart, Restac appears, dying from the toxic fumigation and shoots at the Doctor. Rory pushes the Doctor out of the way and takes the bullet for him, saving his life. Rory dies in Amy’s arms and is consumed by the crack in the wall and written out of history, leaving Amy with no memories of him. The episode ends with the Doctor examining the piece of debris he retrieved from the crack in time, revealing it to be a burnt piece of the TARDIS, which he holds up to the real TARDIS for examination. Apart from the damage, the two pieces are identical.
