Guide: The episode begins with the Doctor in Leadworth, Amy and Rory’s home town, to visit the said companions, who gave up travelling with the Doctor five years previously. Amy is now heavily pregnant and enjoying a quiet life when the Eknodine, masquerading as members of the elderly community, begin to turn people to dust by breathing on them. Then, they wake up, in a TARDIS without power that is slowly heading for a freezing cold star that will kill them. In the TARDIS-reality, the Dream Lord appears to inform them of the test he has devised. They must choose which reality is real, Leadworth or the TARDIS, and which is false. To wake from one of them permanently, they have to die in it. But they must work out which is the false reality, for death in the true reality will be permanent death.

The trio keep switching between the two realities together, until the Dream Lord decides to send the Doctor and Rory to sleep in the TARDIS-reality and keep Amy awake, thus rendering her body asleep in the Leadworth-reality. The Dream Lord questions whether she would choose between the Doctor and Rory before sending her to return to the Leadworth-reality. She joins Rory and the Doctor in defending their house from the Eknodine and goes into false labour pains, prompting Rory to defend her and being turned to dust. Unable to face a reality without Rory, she and the Doctor drive a camper van into the house, seemingly killing them both.

They awake back in the TARDIS-reality to find the TARDIS has power again and the Dream Lord congratulates them on working it out. The Dream Lord departs, leaving the trio to themselves when the Doctor decides to set the TARDIS into self-destruct mode, apparently killing them all. When they wake up, again, this time in the TARDIS that is not in any danger. The Doctor realised that in fact both realities were false, with the Dream Lord being a manifestation of his own darker side. All three of the travelling companions were influenced by psychic pollen that had somehow fallen into the TARDIS creating the false realities and the Dream Lord. The episode ends with Amy and Rory reconfessing their love for each other while the Doctor privately worries about the Dream Lord reappearing in his future.
