Remembered a few more I've watched recently ...

The Equalizer.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0455944/

Quote:In The Equalizer, Denzel Washington plays McCall, a man who believes he has put his mysterious past behind him and dedicated himself to beginning a new, quiet life. But when McCall meets Teri (Chloë Grace Moretz), a young girl under the control of ultra-violent Russian gangsters, he can't stand idly by - he has to help her. Armed with hidden skills that allow him to serve vengeance against anyone who would brutalize the helpless, McCall comes out of his self-imposed retirement and finds his desire for justice reawakened. If someone has a problem, if the odds are stacked against them, if they have nowhere else to turn, McCall will help. He is The Equalizer.

Denzel does an EdwardWoodward ... Big Grin
If you remember the TV series then you will know what to expect. This shows how the Equalizer starts. Nothing too much given away about his past so it leaves it wide open for a second film.
It's a decent enough watch. Solid acting, ok plot, unscrew brain and let it happen. 7/10

A Walk Amongst the Tomb Stones

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0365907/

Quote:Matt Scudder is a former cop now a private eye. He is asked by a drug dealer to find the men who kidnapped his wife. It seems like they killed her even after he paid them. Scudder refuses. But the man later goes to see him and tells him how his wife was killed. Scudder takes the job. He does some research and thinks the men he is looking for have done this more than once. And that everyone they grabbed is connected to a drug dealer. He was about to give up when they grab another girl and Scudder tries make sure she's returned alive.

I usually like Neesons film (with the exception of the mind numbingly boring Into the Grey) but this wasn't one of his best. It was ok in a bit of a 'meh' way and let down badly with it's finale. Reasonable watch but felt a bit pedestrian. 5.5/10

Ride Along

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1408253/

Quote:Security guard Ben must prove himself to his girlfriend's brother, top cop James. He rides along James on a 24-hour patrol of Atlanta.

Watched this with the kids. Def their sense of humour and assume they are the films target audience. I laughed accasionally but it was a bit crap to be honest. 4/10

22 Jump Street

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2294449/

Quote:After making their way through high school (twice), big changes are in store for officers Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum) when they go deep undercover at a local college. But when Jenko meets a kindred spirit on the football team, and Schmidt infiltrates the bohemian art major scene, they begin to question their partnership. Now they don't have to just crack the case - they have to figure out if they can have a mature relationship. If these two overgrown adolescents can grow from freshmen into real men, college might be the best thing that ever happened to them.

Shite. 1/10

Nightcrawler.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2872718/

Quote:NIGHTCRAWLER is a thriller set in the nocturnal underbelly of contemporary Los Angeles. Jake Gyllenhaal stars as Lou Bloom, a driven young man desperate for work who discovers the high-speed world of L.A. crime journalism. Finding a group of freelance camera crews who film crashes, fires, murder and other mayhem, Lou muscles into the cut-throat, dangerous realm of nightcrawling - where each police siren wail equals a possible windfall and victims are converted into dollars and cents. Aided by Rene Russo as Nina, a veteran of the blood-sport that is local TV news, Lou blurs the line between observer and participant to become the star of his own story.

Great acting and fast moving film. One that leaves you very unsatisfied purposely. Don't want to say much more as I don't want to spoil it but it's a very dark, at times voilent film with an anti-hero as lead who you just cannot warm to at all. Horrible man brilliantly acted by Gyllenhaal. 7.5/10

------------

Dying of the Light.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1274586/

Quote:Veteran CIA agent Evan Lake has been ordered to retire. But when his protégé uncovers evidence that Lake's nemesis, the terrorist Banir, has resurfaced, Lake goes rogue, embarking on a perilous, intercontinental mission to eliminate his sworn enemy.

I've enjoyed quite a few of Cages films on the quiet. He does occasionally make a shocker though. This film falls into that categorie. It's worse than shite. 94 minutes forever lost. 0/10.

Taken 3.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2446042/

Quote:Liam Neeson returns as ex-covert operative Bryan Mills, whose long awaited reconciliation with his ex-wife is tragically cut short when she is brutally murdered. Consumed with rage, and framed for the crime, he goes on the run to evade the relentless pursuit of the CIA, FBI and the police. For one last time, Mills must use his "particular set of skills," to track down the real killers, exact his unique brand of justice, and protect the only thing that matters to him now - his daughter.

You know the script for these films and you probably fall into one of two camps - Love or Hate.

Looking back at the trilogy, my thoughts ...

Taken 1. Loved it. Great film, full of cliches but I loved it.

Taken 2. Crap.

So, onto Taken 3. I didn't expect too much as I expected the same (now tired) format. I was pleasantly surprised. Don't get me wrong, the cliches are still there and it's much of a muchness, but they have tweaked the plot and I just enjoyed the ride. If you enjoyed Taken 1 it's well worth watching this third film. Unplug your brain, sit back and enjoy the ride. 7.5/10.

The Gambler.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2039393/

Quote:Jim Bennett is a risk taker. Both an English professor and a high-stakes gambler, Bennett bets it all when he borrows from a gangster and offers his own life as collateral. Always one step ahead, Bennett pits his creditor against the operator of a gambling ring and leaves his dysfunctional relationship with his wealthy mother in his wake. He plays both sides, immersing himself in an illicit, underground world while garnering the attention of Frank, a loan shark with a paternal interest in Bennett's future. As his relationship with a student deepens, Bennett must take the ultimate risk for a second chance...

Hands up from the start - I'm not a Wahlberg fan. I don't think he is a good actor and I think he is too self important for his own good. He appears to be flavour of the month though, so I thought I'd give this film a go.
Wahlberg doesn't disappoint. By that I don't mean he is good. He is typical Wahlberg. Indifferent acting with an annoying voice. His character is someone you just want to slap. And then slap again ... and repeat.
I didn't enjoy the film. I didn't feel sorry for an addicted gambler because the character didn't warrant sympathy. The end was too convenient and all in all thats 111 minutes I won't get back. Crap. 3/10 (and that's bloody generous).

Dumb and Dumber To

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2096672/

Quote:It's been 20 years and Harry Dunn has found something out - he has a daughter! Lloyd Christmas, his equally dim witted friend, takes one look at a picture of her, develops a crush, and insists the two track her down. What ensues when Harry finally agrees is a bizarre encounter with an old lady and more hilarity because of their sheer stupidity.

I'd promised the kids I would let them watch both D&D films. Most have seen the first so I've not bothered with that. The kids found it hilarious, but they are the target audience so I left them to it and fell asleep. Big Grin

I watched most of the new, second one. Half way thorugh I'd pretty much seen enough to not be arsed if I missed some of it. It really is quite painful to watch two old men trying to act young and funny when they aren't and neither is the script. You will laugh occasionally as it has its moments, but that's not the norm. It's quite cringey in places. Clearly a sign that I'm getting old and my kids are it's audience. They thought it was funny and would give it a 7/10 whereas I thought it was a bit crappy and would be 4/10.

Interstellar.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0816692/

Quote:In the near future, Earth has been devastated by drought and famine, causing a scarcity in food and extreme changes in climate. When humanity is facing extinction, a mysterious rip in the space-time continuum is discovered, giving mankind the opportunity to widen its lifespan. A group of explorers must travel beyond our solar system in search of a planet that can sustain life. The crew of the Endurance are required to think bigger and go further than any human in history as they embark on an interstellar voyage into the unknown. Coop, the pilot of the Endurance, must decide between seeing his children again and the future of the human race.

Seeing the IMDb rating of 8.8 and reading the rave reviews of this film I was looking forward to seeing it.
Long story short - It's def not my kind of film. Friends of mine rave about it. I found it slow and dreary for the main part with segements that suddenly sprung to life.
I much preferred Predestination (reviewed ^^ in past post) which keeps you engaged and leaves you going back over the full film. I didn't get that with Interstellar. I was just happy it was over with it's pleasing Hollywood ending.

As said, I do stress that it's clearly not my type of film - so I'll give it a neutral 6.5/10 as there is nothing wrong with the acting, or special effects - I just never warmed to the film.

St Vincent

A young boy whose parents have just divorced finds an unlikely friend and mentor in the misanthropic, bawdy, hedonistic war veteran who lives next door.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2170593/

Its been out for a while but only just got round to watching it, and I've gotta say i really enjoyed it. Very funny in parts and has some sad undertones with a nice storyline thrown in. Bill Murray is excellent in this and the rest of the cast although fairly small is impressive. A really good watch.
