That was similar to my situation with Hastings Direct for the bike. As a new customer, I could get insurance for the price I eventually got it but on the renewals system it was over £300. Same thing with the cars in April, we (Doris and I) have a multi-car with Admiral, but a new quote was over 150 cheaper than the renewal 
Didn't know that about online quotes though - that's a very sneaky move! It's no wonder call centre staff have low job satisfaction when they have to deal with people that are effectively being ripped off by their businesses and the only way to get a proper price is to get seemingly annoyed at them.
