Attending the land of....

Being sent to a conference tomorrow to have a look at some stuff happening in my research area. All fairly standard researchy stuff. Go on conferences all the time.

So where is this exotic conference with all expenses paid by the university?

Toronto?
Paris?
Hong Kong?

Nope... It's in the barren land of Manchester.

If I don't return assume my body has been 'shanked' in an alley somewhere near Old Trafford!

Just stick to the safe areas and you will be fine mate. You want to aim for Moss Side and Failsworth.

If you are anywhere near Peters Street and have time (Near The Hilton and Library) pop into Brewdog. Great (craft) beer and the food is quite nice too.

If you are over Picadilly side then thats Northern Quarter so loads to go at. Monpelliers and Cain and Grain (has a 'secret' floor/room) are a couple of good ones. From Dusk to Pawn is another, but that only opens late afternoon so is evening on really. The rest ^^ are good for lunch.

Not to sure which 'area' I'm in, I just know where the conference is (Manchester Central - where ever that may be). Brewdog sounds like a good start for evening entertainment mind, I'll see if I'm close by when I land tonight and give them a try

Manchester Central is the old GMex the ex grand central rail station, its where they normally hold the bike show and more recently the conservative party conference. It's a nice part of the city plenty of pubs nearby, the central library art gallery etc if that's your thing.

Sound like you might be near the centre then mate.   

I really like Brewdog. Hadn't tried 'Craft' ales before I went in there, but have taken a real liking to them since. 

If you are near there, other places which are ok not too far away ...

Liverpool Road (Akbars is on this road - fantastic curry. No booking, just turn up. Best curryhouse in Manchester and not expensive).

Well I survived. Just. The hotel didn't want to give me a key that worked for the room but eventually got it sorted with a free upgrade (paid for a single room, got a double with a decent view of the city - not that I saw much of it at night in the darkness).

Too many bars is very true, I ended up having a bacardi and coke in one before returning to bed. Turns out conferencing is a tiring business! The Manchester Central was nice, the architecture in the exhibition space (the bit that I'm presuming was the station) was very nice, and much more enjoyable to look at than people trying to sell me medical equipment that I'm not capable of purchasing!

The car, though parked a million miles (about 5 mins) from the hotel also survived, though I did go and check on it at night and in the morning, just in case.

Now going off to a much safer and saner place - Snetterton for Bemsee's last meeting of the year!

Lightweight!   

With regards to the architecture, yes there are some really nice buildings around Manchester. A few have been renovated but many fantastic old buildings are teetering on disrepair - being used as cheap parking spaces in the centre.
