Minority Report

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4450826/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

Quote:10 years after the end of Precrime in Washington DC one of the three PreCogs attempts to lead on a normal life while still suffering from visions of the future. Will they be able to hold it together or mentally breakdown and give up?

Watched the first two episodes over weekend. I quite enjoyed the film, so thought I'd see what the series was like.
The first episode was ok. Good enough (whilst nothing special) for me to watch another - but that was it. There is a sub plot which will slowly weave its way through the series, but I think each episode is going to be very 'samey'. I was messing with my phone bored half way through the second episode so wont be bothering with another unless I've no alternative. IMDb gives it 5.9 and thats probably generous based on what I've watched.

RE: TV Series Worth Watching. - Kingy - 01-04-2016

OK. With my 'very sober' Christmas and New Year I got chance to fly through a few TV series that have been recommended. It meant some late nights (early hours) of dedication, but as I wasn't boozing I was dedicated  Big Grin

I did three series. All good, but in order enjoyment ...

Third Place:

Blindspot.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4474344/?ref_=nv_sr_1

Quote:A woman with no memories of her past (Jane Doe), is found naked in Times Square with her body fully covered in intricate tattoos. Her discovery sets off a vast and complex mystery that immediately ignites the attention of the FBI, which begins to follow the road map of her tattoos into a larger conspiracy of crime, while bringing her closer to discovering the truth about her identity.

I thought of the Guy Pearce film Memento when I looked at this. Whilst similar theme it's a very different storyline. Memento is a chap using tatoos and notes to try and beat his lack of memory, whereas Blindspot is a woman whos memory has been purposely wiped clean and the tatoos left as a 'treasure map' for her and the FBI to figure out. You are never certain who or why which works well.
There are ten episodes to watch so far. They set the series up very well. It's a bit tongue in cheek at times, but good viewing and well worth the effort to watch.

Second Place:

Peaky Blinders.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2442560/?ref_=nv_sr_1

Quote:A gangster family epic set in 1919 Birmingham, England and centered on a gang who sew razor blades in the peaks of their caps, and their fierce boss Tommy Shelby, who means to move up in the world.

This is BRILLIANT!
Absolutely loved it.
Excellent casting, great sound track, great writing and the acting is spot on.
If you haven't already watched it then treat yourself.  Cool

A worthy First Place:

Band of Brothers

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0185906/?ref_=nv_sr_1

Quote:This is the story of "E" Easy Company, 506th Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division from their initial training starting in 1942 to the end of World War II. They parachuted behind enemy lines in the early hours of D-Day in support of the landings at Utah beach, participated in the liberation of Carentan and again parachuted into action during Operation Market Garden. They also liberated a concentration camp and were the first to enter Hitler's mountain retreat in Berchtesgaden. A fascinating tale of comradeship that is, in the end, a tale of ordinary men who did extraordinary things.

This is an oldie (2001) so you may have seen it. I hadn't and knew nothing about it.

Wow.

Amazing.

If you can sit though this and not have a tear in your eye on more than one occasion then you have no heart! Incredibly powerful stuff. It is just fantastic. I don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it - so just watch it. It's one series, 10 episodes so an easy watch.
The casting, writing, acting, sets ... well, everything is as near to perfect as you will get.
Best series I've ever watched alongside The Sopranos.

Wicked City

This popped up on showbox so thought I'd give it a whirl, starts off quite innocently in a disco on sunset strip where a guy is putting on the charm and bullshit in order to pull. Roll on next scene in a car overlooking the back of the Hollywood sign, said guy getting a nosh! Looks up at his sun visor and grabs a knife. I'l leave it there as now begins the cat and mouse game.

http://www.imdb.com › title

A pair of LAPD detectives track down serial killers terrorizing the Sunset Strip.(that's all imdb says and gives it a 6.7 I think it's better than that myself)

Cool

I was chatting to a mate (Steve) who loves his TV series / Films. We recommend ones we've seen (or warn each other off poor ones). He's a well read chap and has written episodes for old UK TV series like 'The Bill' so gives a good insight into why something is worth taking time to see. He dropped Band of Brothers in the conversation matter of fact when he was talking to me - assuming I'd seen it. When I said I hadn't he was taken by surprise and said to make sure I did at the first opportunity. He couldn't believe I'd not seen it. Glad it was mentioned as it was so bloody good!

Another couple I've had a look at ...

The Man in the High Castle.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1740299/

Quote:Based on Philip K. Dick's award-winning novel and adapted by Frank Spotniz, The Man in the High Castle explores what it would be like if the Allied Powers had lost WWII, and Japan and Germany ruled the United States. Starring Rufus Sewell (John Adams), Luke Kleintank (Pretty Little Liars) and Alexa Davalos (Mob City). Executive produced by Ridley Scott (Blade Runner).
Quote:A glimpse into an alternate history of North America. What life after WWII may have been like if the Nazis had won the war.

I've got Amazon Prime which includes their streaming service. They have been hammering this to death as its an 'Amazon Original'. Given the producer and cast I decided to watch it. It's another one where I'm very uncertain how it's got a high 8.2 in IMDb. It looks great. Very good visually and the cast/ acting is good. The letdown is it's a rather slow and ambling plot / storyline. It never seems to hit a pace and run with it. I was quite bored through a few episodes and found myself watching it just to get to the finale, which I'd already guessed correctly well beforehand anyway. I didn't appreciate the very end of this first series either. Won't spoil it for anyone, but I won't be rushing to seee season 2 when/if it's released.

Jessica Jones

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2357547/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

Quote:Ever since her short-lived stint as a superhero ended in tragedy, Jessica Jones has been rebuilding her personal life and career as a hot-tempered, sardonic private detective in Hell's Kitchen, New York City. Plagued by self-loathing and a wicked case of PTSD, Jessica battles demons from within and without, using her extraordinary abilities as an unlikely champion for those in need... especially if they're willing to cut her a check.

My son is Marvel mad. He loves The Avenger films and anything associated with them. So I've seen the lot. I saw an advert about this series and it explained how Marvel started a line of comics aimed at adult audiences. Adult themes, more violence etc. This was one of them. With this in mind I thought I'd give it a chance. I lasted about three or four episodes which were hard work. I didn't like Krysten Ritter in the lead one bit. Just didn't take to her at all. The main characters don't transfer well from the comics and neither do the plots/ subplots. Too many holes and too obvious.

Battle Creek

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3215364/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

Quote:Two detectives with different views on the world team up and using cynicism, guile and deception, they clean up the streets of Battle Creek.

It's a buddy buddy series. Rough, take a chance cop and pristine, perfect FBI by the book cop (with a hidden past yet to be revealed).
It bobs along nicely and tried to be a bit 'Lethal Weapon' but just ends up being another "You know exactly whats going to happen as it's the same formula every episode" Police show.
I lasted three episodes (I think) and searched for something with more bite to watch. Battle Creek does nothing wrong and will appeal to people who like shows like 'The Mentalist' or 'Castle' as you can literally watch any episode as 'easy viewing' without worrying too much about the main ongoing plotlines. As it happens I found Peaky Blinders when looking for something else, so I do have Battle Creek to thank for that!  Tongue

Black Sails is back, if the first episode is anything to go by its gonna be a good series.

RE: TV Series Worth Watching. - Kingy - 01-25-2016

Thanks for the heads up Martin. I've enjoyed this so far.

We are going to go from scraping around looking for new series to not being able to keep up as they all return from their season/ mid season breaks!

Watched S3 E1 last night. Agree it was a very good opener. It has gone from strength to strength. Very enjoyable.
