Guide: The first episode of the fourth series of Doctor Who starts with Donna Noble (Catherine Tate) who has previously appeared in the 2006 Christmas special, “The Runaway Bride”. Since her first encounter with the Doctor she felt that her life was going to change, but to her disappointment she was hurled back into her normal everyday life with her Mother, Sylvia (Jacqueline King) and her Amateur Astronomer Grandfather, Wilfred (Bernard Cribbins). Spending day after day listening to her mothers nagging, Donna regrets declining the Doctor’s offer to join him in the TARDIS and sets out to look for him.
The Adipose Industry is featured in this episode, the industry that manufactures a diet pill marketed with the slogan “the fat just walks away” . Both the Doctor and Donna are suspicious and decide to investigate, not knowing that the other was there too. It turns out that the slogan was literal, the pill uses latent body fat to create the Adipose, small white (cute) aliens made completely out of body fat. When the Doctor and Donna meet, they are both spotted and confronted by Miss Foster (Sarah Lancashire), an alien who is exploiting Britain’s overweight population to create her Adipose.
Feeling threatened by the Doctor, Foster goes forward with her plan, knowing that the process will kill thousands of overweight people over London. As thousands of adorable Adipose make their way to the Adipose Industry, Foster calls the Adiposian First Family and their spaceship hovers above the building, taking all the white aliens. Foster is killed to hide evidence that the Adipose had used Earth illegally to breed their kind.
In the end, Donner accepts yet another offer to join the TARDIS crew and leaves the car keys in a dustbin for her mother to find. Asking a blonde woman (whom we only see the back of the head) to aid her mother to find the keys, she runs off. The blonde woman turns around to face the camera, and it turns out to be Rose Tyler (Billie Piper) from series 1 and 2. She holds the camera’s gaze for a few seconds, then turns around and walks away, disappearing into the air. The Doctor and Donna then start their adventures together in the TARDIS at the end of the episode.
